Humpback and Killer Whale Interactions

In recent years, we have noticed more humpback whales interfering with killer whale predation events. We published a big collaborative paper on this in 2017, and we have also done several presentations discussing this phenomenon. Humpback whales will intervene in both pinniped and gray whale predations. During one of our more recent observations, we even saw a humpback whale lift a sea lion up with its pec fin/back! We have also documented humpback whales exhibiting postmortem attraction towards deceased gray whale calves. Documenting these interactions is a big part of our research. Check out the drone video below, and much more.
